Northeast to honor military Thursday

Northeast Mississippi Community College has announced it will host a Military Appreciation Night this Thursday as the Tigers play their North Division opener against Holmes at Tiger Stadium.

“The main reason we are able to do what we’re doing is because of those people sacrificing their selves and their lives for us, so we want to show them that we appreciate what they do for us,” Northeast head coach Ricky Smither said. “It’s going to be a big night. We’re going to have a lot of people involved. A lot of stuff is going on. We’re excited about it.”

The Tigers and the Bulldogs are set for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff, but the festivities begin before the game starts.

Representatives from both the United States Army and the Mississippi National Guard will have booths set up around the grounds of the stadium. Both groups will have games, such as a football toss, for fans to play and win prizes.

The Mississippi National Guard will also set up an inflatable play area for children on the practice field, located directly behind the visitors bleachers on the east side of the complex.

Other spectator-friendly displays that are scheduled as part of this special evening include an up-armored hummer like those used in combat missions by the Mississippi National Guard and a machine that allows fans to make their own dog tags identical to those that military personnel wear.

Fans that attend Thursday’s contest are asked to consider giving a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project, which provides unique and direct programs to meet the needs of injured service members. The Wounded Warrior Project has provided gifts including lapel pins, bracelets and stickers for those that contribute to its cause.

Pregame ceremony that includes the acknowledgement of all veterans in attendance and the presentation of the colors preceding the playing of the National Anthem by Northeast’s Showband from Tigerland is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
