Several items belonging to the Veterans Administration including a briefcase with files stolen in a vehicle burglary last week have been recovered and suspects in the breakin identified.

The incident was discovered last Friday in a parking area at the Career Center off Ridley St. The victim told Crossville Police Sgt. Chad Withrow that he thought he had locked his vehicle on Thursday evening when he parked the vehicle in the job center’s parking lot.

The next morning, the victim discovered that the vehicle had been broken into and a black briefcase with files, Tennessee Department of Veterans Services portfolio, thumb drive for a computer, veterans lapel pins, portable printer, two projectors and three sets of keys.

Value of the items stolen was placed at $550, according to Withrow’s report.

A man who hangs around the parking lot was identified as a possible suspect, but investigation expanded when Lt. Tony Davis told the responding officer that he had conducted a check on two homeless people who were staying in a semi trailer parked beside the Career Center and has seen the pair in possession of some of the stolen items.

Officers attempted to find the two and later located them in a tent located behind Big John’s BBQ off N. Main St. A search of the camp produced the briefcase and files and a projector.

A man and woman were later taken into custody after being found walking along West Ave. and were jailed, placed on investigative hold.

Police recovered two black bags, keys, the thumb drive and the lapel pins reported stolen in the burglary.

The two were interviewed and warrants later obtained for their arrest, according to Withrow’s report. They were only identified as Kelia Ramos, 28, and Andrew Smith, 21.
