Doll collectors who like the outdoors will be glad to know there is a pheasant-hunting Barbie.
You'd get that impression if you look at the pheasant dresses produced by Doreen Dirksen. One of the pheasant crafts produced by the Conde native is an attractive dress designed to fit Barbie-type dolls.
Dirksen of Lake Preston uses pheasant pelts and feathers to produce a lot of items, including cowboy hat pins, wreaths, lapel pins, hair clips and centerpieces.
Those items are among the many handcrafted materials sold at the Conde Artisans Gift Shop. That shop, located in the former Conde School, is open three days a week for most of the year.
When plans were made to open the gift shop in 2009, Bev Wright asked Dirksen to contribute something to the store. Wright and Darlene Grant, who is Dirksen's mother, had been Dirksen's 4-H leaders when she was young.
